Nativity colour and cut out fun set

I have been doing the odd cut out figure sets recently, and as we are this close to Christmas I thought I would do a nativity theme. Our church will be giving these out during December, and I thought I would provide it as my first freebie. More to come, when I finish my website design! To get one, just send me an email to me at fimh@blueyonder.co.uk with a request, and I will put you on my mailing list, and send you a jpg of the nativity characters. Just colour, cut out, and stand them up. I just tried them out with normal paper, and they worked fine, but I am sure the best results will come through either printing it out on thick paper, or card. As it is free, please enjoy using this, but do not put it out for re-sale, or redistribution, or use my creations for anything else. Have a great Christmas!

Here is an advert I did recently for weba (West of England Baptist Association), to appear in the Baptist Times. The copy was already provided, so I just needed to design the characters around it. It was fun to do, and I look forward to seeing it in print, in the next edition of the newspaper.

Just a note to say that although there has not been any posts for quite a while, that does not mean there has not been any cartoons created. I have produced a few single panel gags that I have sent out to magazines. I am working on a children's book, and also developing a website. So watch this space.

Doctor Who: Robot

"Sarah, he is psychologically deranged. No you can't keep the robot!"

For anybody that remember, and enjoyed Tom Baker's debut story 'Robot' I hope this will bring a smile to your face. I remember waiting in trepidation to see what this new, and strange looking Doctor would be like. I loved Jon Pertwee, and could not imagine anyone else filling his shoes. Well I need not have worried, because I was delighted with this bohemian, eccentric, unpredictable Doctor, so much so, he is my favourite Doctor of all!

The story itself gets a lot of stick, for having a very limp wristed, and wonky looking robot, and also for that infamous 'tank' scene. However, I love it! It is a great introduction to the Doctor who went on to captivate generations of children and adults alike. Elisabeth Sladen was fantastic as the assistant as always. and it was obvious that she and Tom made an incredible team. She played the beauty to the robot's beast, feeling compassion for this unfortunate machine, who was forced by it's masters to steal, kill and destroy. It is worth checking out if you ever get a chance!

Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen

I was genuinely sad to here about the news of the death of Lis Sladen! What a tragedy for her family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. She played my favourite among all the Doctor Who assistants, Sarah Jane Smith. She was feisty, yet vulnerable, funny, and a beautiful English rose if there ever was one. There are very few in the acting profession that could keep a character alive, and relevant like Lis Sladen had done over the years, and so I wanted to do this tribute to thank her for the enjoyment she has brought to us all. I never met her, but by all accounts from people who had, they said how gracious and kind she was. Her personality certainly came through her performances and interviews!

She started her time with Doctor Who along side the legendary Jon Pertwee in 1973 in the 'Time Warrior'. She was great at the role straight from the start, and embraced by the fans of the show.

The cartoon shows the last time she played Sarah Jane with Tom Baker back in 1976. Her and Tom were great together, and their friendship shone through. My favourite Doctor and assistant together. For me the golden age of Dr Who, with stories like the 'Seeds of Doom', 'Genesis of the Daleks', 'The Ark in Space', 'Pyramids of Mars', 'The Brain of Morbius', and many more I could mention! In this one 'The Hand of Fear', she wore in that story what was often described as an Andy Pandy costume; but it was the 70s, and Lis would look great in anything, so I certainly did not see anything odd about it. I think the phrase 'Eldrad must live', followed her around at all the Who conventions she attended, as it was one of those iconic moments in British sci-fi television. I thought it was fitting to choose this as a tribute to her. RIP Lis!

Tribute to the Brig!

It was very sad news to hear about the passing of Nicholas Courtney back on the 22nd February 2011. He was brilliant at playing 'The Brig', and I came to appreciate him a lot more as I got older. I met him at a Doctor Who convention in Weston-Super-Mare, and he was as charming and witty as the character he played in Doctor Who! He will always be fondly remembered. RIP Nicholas!

Doctor Who is my all time favourite television programme, so I had to do a cartoon on this subject eventually, and it certainly will not be the last. Because of the space constraints of a single panel gag, I thought I would just include a few of my favourite Doctors. From left to right we have Matt Smith, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Jon Pertwee, and the best of all Tom Baker. I would have liked to have included William Hartnell, and Patrick Troughton, and in fact I have done a pencil sketch of them, and the other Doctors not included in this gag. May be I will do the full version one day, when I get some more time!

Ann Widdecombe: Dancing Queen

Some are good.

Some are bad.

Some are really rad.

Some could not even fox trot, even if they had a

red furry coat, and a bushy tail.

You know the ones who are going to miserably fail.

But along came Ann Widdecombe to the scene,

that controversial, outrageous, Strictly Come Dancing Queen.

We watched each performance with laughter and tears,

and not even the critics could stop our spontaneous cheers,

as Anton Du Beke threw her around the room,

which made Craig Revel Horwood internally fume!

She took a lot of criticism, and Anton would just grin.

Is it possible; really possible that they might win?

As painful as haemorrhiods one said, and like a lame canary,

but she was determined to get the prize, and try everything that was necessary:

From flying in the air, or buffing the floor,

the general public definitely wanted more.

Just thinking about her made people smile.

Pick up the phone, vote, go on dial!

Should she stay in the competition the critics cried? Is it fair?

You try telling her that. In fact you dare!

"You bet it is", said Ann, as she prepared for the next dance.

"It's up to the voters, and not to chance!"

But we did fear for Anton that he might break a wrist,

as he hurled Ann around the dance floor,

or slip a precious spinal disc.

But alas the competition is over for her, and now she is a lady of leisure.

Who would have thought this Tory MP would become a national treasure!

I had this idea knocking around for a long time, so thought it was about time to put flesh to the bone! I love the idea of this naive vicar, who is just about to get unceremoniously hauled off by the Bishop. I remember seeing comedies where stage acts would get pulled off stage if they were awful. Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival 2010

I went to the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival on the 24/04/2010. Took my portfolio and Noel Ford (No Less!) looked at my work. I was so encouraged that he liked my work and was so positive. It is well worth a visit if you ever get a chance. The cartoonists paint on large boards in the centre of the town, and there are various workshops and galleries dotted around.

When I was a kid, I can still remember the excitement I used to feel when I got a new comic. I loved them all, The Hulk, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, and Dare Devil. The list can go on and on. Budget 2010

I thought I would do an editorial cartoon for a change. The budget is coming up, and what do we have? An economy which is on it's knees, and a party that will need to address this situation. However, they will not be able to tax us too heavily because that would make the situation worse, and also as it is a pre-election budget, they will not be able to bribe us with tax cuts. Don't get me wrong, I do not have any political favourites (as far as I am concerned they are all as bad as each other), however this situation happened on Labour's watch, and they did not keep enough financial resources to be able to deal with the problem. We shall see what Alistair Darling can come with!

Fight

This cartoon was done in response to a news item, reporting on a fight that broke out between monks in the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. It was all very mad, and could have easily been a clip from Father Ted. I was a bit short on time when I did this, and would have wanted to refine the composition a lot more than I did. However, I think the cartoon successfully gives an idea of the utter madness of the situation.

Cartoon Dinosaur

For the sake of fairness I did this dinosaur for my friend's son. You can purchase various apparel with this illustration on at Cartoon Dinotees.

When I was a kid, like the children today I was fascinated with dinosaurs. Of course we did not have the merchandise and films they got now! I still got my books from then, and also my PG Tips card collection in the book. It is amazing how far things have come special effects wise, since I was a kid. Films like 'One Million Years BC', with the lovely Raquel Welch, 'The land that time forgot', and 'When dinosaurs ruled the earth', were the films I saw then. For the time they looked great; with the stop frame animation, and even the lizards with frills stuck on with glue. I can not imagine what I would have been like if we had 'Jurassic Park' back then?

Friends in my head

I decided to call my studio 'Friends in my head', because my humour is often accused of being a little "out there" at times! This is the design that will eventually appear on my business cards and website. The illustration features the Bloops (formerly the Blobs), which are characters I came up with for a series of children's books, back in the 80's. I just can not get them out of my system! I am hoping to illustrate these and put them out for publication in the future.

I remember when the film 'Jaws' came out. My love for dinosaurs in general became eclipsed by a fascination for this amazing creature, and immediately I wanted to go looking for sharks. Not very practical when you are 11 years old and living in Bristol in the UK!
